Institute of Global Affairs (IGA) was initially launched under the name of 'Agency of Northeast Asia' in October, 1986 with the objective of examining the fast changing Northeast Asian region.
The agency has expanded its scope of regional studies from Northeast Asian region to Asian and Pacific Ocean rim area.
To gether with the goal of maintaining international peace and accelerating global communication, IGA has implemented interdisciplinary regional research programs by adapting both liberal arts and social science. In addition, by focusing on society, culture, history, politics, and economy of the related regions, IGA was attempting to obtain scientific professionalism and universality upon its studies. In 2009, IGA was nominated as the promising institution that specializes its capacity of regional research programs by the National Research Foundation of Korea. With such opportunity, IGA, through reorganization and expansion of its research capability and programs, established East Sea Rim Research Center concentrating its research resources on East Sea Rim regional studies.
To continue, IGA, through accumulated research outcomes and research environment, began to concurrently execute academic research performance (seminars, forums, and colloquiums, etc.) and educational activities (citizens forum and regional studies program for citizens lecturing). Also, the research outcomes were shared and re-distributed to the academic and international society.
Moreover, IGA will utilize already established research networks and capability to create a firm status and foundation for East Sea Rim Region Center. On the basis of such strong foothold IGA will continuously study and expand its knowledge about Northeast Asian region and Asian Pacific area . Therefore, IGA will construct a long term sustainable research plan and goal to become one of the leading global affairs institutions.
