Research Objectives

The East Sea region contains not only indigenous identity but also shows diversity and heterogeneous nature. Historically, diverse ethnic groups and their culture have coexisted in this region. Furthermore, political system and economic levels of four countries are different each other, which makes it not a secure and stable place but rather a dynamic place of continuing transition. In spite of such unstatic diversity of the region, East Sea has been considered as the key role-player of interconnecting the regional diversity. Even before the establishment of ancient kingdoms, along the coast line of East Sea various transaction had occurred among the people and during the later 6th century, there were also active trans-border negotiations between Koguryeo and Japan, Bo Hai and Japan. (Ancient East Sea Rim Archives) Until today, such patterns of transactions are still valid in the field of transportation and allocation of resources to achieve economic cooperation.

Like, based upon the long history of East Sea's ecological system and diverse interstate network, this region would be a complicated place with complex politics, economy, and cultural relationship. Due to these reasons, East Sea region's potential significance has been acknowledged by the modern states. Specially, East Sea's uncontaminated natural environment becomes a new alternative space not only just for Northeast Asia but also for global means. However, the complexity of regional order and dynamics has caused continuous conflicts and disputes among the sovereign states. Some of politically sensitive issues are Dokdo and it’s title for East Sea between Japan and Korea. To sum up, East Sea Region Studies will re-examine dynamic relations with a perspective of glocalism. Such perspective has convinced us to believe to overcome the limited recognition of East Sea as a nation state and recognize the area as a public territory for all the inhabitants in East Sea Rim. Ultimately, the study is expected to contribute upon implementing proper regional understandings and realization of peace and communication in Northeast Asia.
